Spy Glass

A small mod adding a single item: the Spy Glass, usable with Right Click/Secondary.

Craftable in the Worbench (Tools section).

Equippable in a Utility Slot!

Maximum distance of 50 blocks.

Zooms out automatically below 50 blocks, making it useable at short distances.

When below 50 blocks: hear sounds of the location you're looking at, making it an effective spying tool!

Why do I look through the world if I angle the spy glass in a certain way?

Unfortunately the camera settings don't really expect a negative distance for the camera, so enabling the inbuilt camera collisions causes players to immediately disconnect. I'd much rather have a visual bug than a disconnect! I've logged a bug with Hypixel Studios - hopefully they can fix it soon!

I've lost the spy glass and got stuck zoomed in! Help!!

Use the `/resetspyglass` command or exit to main menu and reload. Apologies - I struggled to find a way to trigger an interaction when an item is dropped, and dropping doesn't seem to be an interaction we modders have access to. Again, logged feedback with Hypixel about this. If anyone has ideas for how I might fix this I'd love to hear it!

Author's Note:

A fun little project to get me started with Hytale modding. It's a very interesting modding system! But at the same time, the lack of modded clients adds a number of unexpected restrictions. The spy glass works by moving the player camera, since I can't actually change the FOV. So the perspective isn't typical of an actual spy glass but I think it actually turned out cooler as a result. Especially with the fact it causes you to hear the audio of the location you're looking from.

There's a surprising amount of work involved for just a single item. Modelling, texturing, UI, code, testing, publishing it here and any theoretical maintenance required. It's been a interesting experience though and I'm excited to build some more stuff in this game.
